Using Library Resources & Services

All faculty desiring to use library resources must obtain a LIBRARY CARD. Stop at the circulation desk to obtain your card and get information about using library materials.

CHECKOUT OF MATERIALS FOR CLASS USE
Faculty may check out books, periodicals (except the most recent issue), and AV materials for use in MRCTC class-related or activity-related functions. These materials may be held by the faculty for the duration of the class or activity by arrangement with the Librarian. Please check out all materials at the circulation desk.

Faculty are asked to return all materials when they are no longer needed for class or activity purposes. Remember, materials purchased by the library should be available to the general college community as much as possible. Items which faculty wish to keep permanently in their offices should be purchased through their own department budgets.

NTERLIBRARY LOAN
Through MINITEX and other consortia, the Mesabi library can obtain books and periodical articles not found in the Mesabi library. Some can be obtained in a few days; others may take two weeks or more to obtain. Interlibrary loan requests may be initiated via WebPALS computers in faculty offices, college computer labs, or at home.

RESERVE MATERIALS
Faculty may place books, periodicals, audiovisual items, etc., on RESERVE for their students. Regular RESERVE is limited to in-library use for two hours. Overnight RESERVE is allowed upon request of faculty. Please talk to your Librarian for assistance in putting materials on RESERVE for your class.

Material Selection Policy

The Librarian will consider requests for purchase of materials and the acceptance of gifts that originate from faculty, administration, staff, students, and community persons. The selection of such materials will be based upon the following guidelines:

The collection should meet the needs of the college community according to the following order of priority:

  • instructional needs
  • general informational needs
  • cultural and recreational needs

The collection should reflect the usage patterns of the college community as determined by:

  • circulation statistics
  • faculty assignments to students
  • reference questions by patrons

The collection should be reliable, and have:

  • appropriately up-dated resources
  • an adequate amount of classics in all fields appropriate to the college community
  • chronological continuity

The collection should contain a balance of print and non-print formats based upon:

  • their appropriateness for the subject matter they cover
  • the current state of technology

The materials selected under the above considerations should represent as broad a spectrum of political, cultural, and moral/ethical viewpoints as possible. Insofar as possible, review sources are used as selection tools. Publisher information is generally not considered reliable. The collection does not contain duplicate copies of items. Duplicates will not be purchased to substitute for class textbooks.
