Prerequisite: All students entering the Graphic Arts Program must first follow a sequence of first year courses followed by second year courses. Any student who enters the program with previous credits or work experience must have permission of all faculty in the department and Administration.
GRAP 1225 Direct to Plate Technology (1 Lec; 1 Lab; 2 Cr) This course covers making line and halftone negatives. The curriculum will also cover direct-to-plate technology and peripheral equipment.
GRAP 1226 Graphic Communications (1 Lec; 1 Lab; 2 Cr) This course will enable students to discover and explore the job opportunities in the graphic communications industry. It will also cover the history of the printing industry.
GRAP 1227 Film Assembly (1 Lec; 2 Lab; 3 Cr) This course covers terms related to film assembly, combine line and halftone work, multi-color work, signature printing, the use of masking film and the pin register system in printing.
GRAP 1235 Offset Press (1 Lec; 3 Lab; 4 Cr) This course covers safe ways to dress when operating a press. It covers flow of paper through the press, making selection of proper-set-up of feeder and delivery operations. It also covers the inking system, dampening system, and press operations techniques.
GRAP 1236 Offset Inks and Chemistry (1 Lec; 1 Cr) This course covers the main ingredients of ink and describes a procedure for measuring alcohol in fountain solution. Students learn to mix inks and test PH in fountain solutions.
GRAP 1237 Platemaking Procedures (1 Lec; 1 Lab; 2 Cr) This course covers correct plate exposure and making required plates for single or multiple color jobs, using negatives and/or screens and halftones.
GRAP 1245 Printing Estimating (1 Lec; 2 Lab; 3 Cr) This course covers the basic fundamentals of estimating a printing job. Figuring BHR’s and overhead into a printing companies long term goals. Students also develop the ability to read job tickets and fill them out correctly.
GRAP 1246 Environmental Awareness (1 Lec; 1 Lab; 2 Cr) This course will discuss the precautions needed to be taken when working with inks and chemicals in the graphic arts industry. To a large degree the course will also discuss the need for recycling all waste products.
GRAP 1247 Bindery Operations (1 Lec; 2 Lab; 3 Cr) This course covers basic binding and finishing techniques, such as folding, padding, drilling and stitching jobs. It also covers paper cutting in a safe accurate manner.
GRAP 1255 Advanced Press I (1 Lec; 3 Lab; 4 Cr) This course allows students to work on projects that meet their needs and special interests to develop occupational proficiency. Students work on projects that allow them to work on a project plan start to finish.
GRAP 1256 Quality Control in Graphic Arts (1 Lec; 1 Lab; 2 Cr) This course will cover the team building skills of working together in groups to solve problems. It ensures the need for quality control procedures in graphic arts.
GRAP 2265 Introduction to Desktop Publishing (1 Lec; 2 Lab; 3 Cr) This course provides the student with an individual Macintosh workstation, tutorial software and manuals and is a study of the functions of the microcomputer, the keyboard, the mouse, the operating system and the functions of Electronic Prepress.
GRAP 2266 Graphic Layout and Design (1 Lec; 4 Lab; 5 Cr) This course covers the design and layout of the use of several pages; how to use the tool box and floating palettes; how to flow and format text; how to import and manipulate text and graphics; how to draw objects; how to apply color; and how to print your documents used in electronic desk-top publishing. The students learn how to create principles of balance, design, tone and harmony. Prerequisite: GRAP 2265
GRAP 2267 Advertising and Copy Preparation (1 Lec; 1 Cr) This course covers the creative functions of advertising, calculates copyfitting, and package design. This course will also cover the copyright laws and how they apply to the various medias. Prerequisites: GRAP 2265 and GRAP 2266
GRAP 2268 Electronic Illustration (1 Lec; 4 Lab; 5 Cr) This course covers Adobe Illustrator and all of the menu and sub-menu functions used in the Graphics Arts Industry for the purpose of desk top illustration, layout, design, advertising and printing preparations. This program will allow you to draw precise lines and shapes in any weight and style, to fill them with color or patterns and to use type as illustration elements. Prerequisites: GRAP 2265 and GRAP 2266
GRAP 2275 Advanced Electronic Production with QuarkExpress (1 Lec; 1 Lab; 2 Cr) This course covers the powerful and versatile tools to create professional documents. This course also covers the use of setting type and incorporate text and graphics in a single and multi-page document. This course will give you the freedom to import and export text, graphic files, halftones and digital files from other programs, platforms and operating systems. Prerequisites: GRAP 2265 and GRAP 2266
GRAP 2276 Adobe Photoshop Advertising Design (1 Lec; 5 Lab; 6 Cr) This course emphasizes four color process printing and photo color correction for prepress. Students will utilize Adobe Photoshop software for the Macintosh. Prerequisites: GRAP 2265 and GRAP 2266
GRAP 2277 Advanced Color Separation (1 Lec; 1 Lab; 2 Cr) This course covers the basic principles of color theory, color separation and printing procedures used on electronic image setters and direct to plate methods. Prerequisite: GRAP 2276
GRAP 2278 Advanced Color Layout and Design-Animation (1 Lec; 1 Lab; 2 Cr) This course allows the student to work on projects that meets the needs and special interests of the student to develop occupational proficiency. The student will specialize in developing competencies required to follow a project from start to finish. Prerequisites: GRAP 2276, GRAP 2265, and GRAP 2266
GRAP 2279 Multi Media/Web Page Design (1 Lec; 1 Lab; 2 Cr) This course covers the use of Macintosh Multi Media software used to create presentations complete with graphics, speaker notes and handouts. Utilizing the powerful tools of Multi Media software will help you organize, reorganize and edit information on any part of your electronics slide presentation. You will easily produce charts, graphs, animated objects and graphics. Prerequisites: GRAP 2265 and GRAP 2266
