What’s Happening

Our Annual Skills Fair was a big success!  More than 200 students competed in 25 areas of skills. Sixteen students from area high schools competed in the Welding Contest. Though the competition was close, we could only award three places. Eric Pavelich from Virginia High School took first place. He was awarded a “Gold” medal and a Jackson EQC electronic quick change welding hood. James Little from Mesabi East High School took second for a “Silver” medal and a Lincoln Electric electronic quick change welding hood. Third place was won by Chelsea Trucano from Virginia High School. She received a “bronze” medal and a ProStar welding helmet.

The AWS District 15 Director, Mr. Mace Harris, donated  the Lincoln Electric welding hood, addressed the entire assembly regarding the future needs of the trades and industries. He and Tom Baldwin presented the awards and held door prize drawings for the welding contestants.  Caps, shirts, tools and gloves, donated by the sponsors, were given away by name drawings.

Mr Mike Hanson, AWS Northwest Section Chairman, accompanied Mr. Harris to the competition to observe. He said he was very impressed with the contest and how it can draw high school students into a post-secondary setting to see what it can provide for the potential student. He will definitely bring this idea back to the Metro area.

The sponsors providing prizes include: American Welding Society, Valley National Gas - Reynolds Welding Supply from the Metro area, Airgas of Mt. Iron, Praxair of Virginia, ESAB of North America, and this college.

Look for Future AWS Arrowhead Section Activities to be listed here! Tours and Educational events will be posted here that all will be welcome to attend...most of the events are free of charge!

It’s set! The Welding Technician Certificate Program is in place for Fall 2006. This gives prospective students another choice for welding training. It is structured in a way that if the successful WTC graduate wants to ’ladder-in’ to a higher level of training, he or she could easily do so.

The  Associate of Applied Science in Welding Technologies gives prospective students more opportunities to ‘fine-tune’ their education. Currently, with hopes of having it completed by Fall2006, Tom Baldwin, Doug Mroz, James Cagle and Carol Helland are working on an articulation agreement with Ferris State University Welding Engineering Technologies Department Head, Dr. Jeffrey Carney and Bemidji State University Industrial Technologies Department Head, Dr. James McCrackin. If successful, most or all credits earned in the Mesabi Range College A.A.S. in Welding Technologies Program will transfer directly to Ferris State University’s Welding Engineering Technology Program or Bemidji State University Industrial Technologies Program!
