Thank you for your interest in Mesabi Range Community and Technical College’s Industrial Technology with Mining Emphasis AAS degree. Mesabi Range introduced the program in the fall of 2006 and had over thirty students enrolled the first year. We expect another huge response for the 2007 program year and are excited to offer you an opportunity to take part in this groundbreaking course of study.

Today is an exciting time for the taconite mining industry's economic future and employment outlook on Minnesota’s Iron Range. The high global demand for iron ore pellets has resulted in growth opportunities in taconite mining. This demand has resulted in most of the iron range's mining operations running near capacity, or in some cases expanding. At the same time, the mining industry expects between 40% and 60% of its workforce to retire in the next 3 to 7 years. The mines are looking to fill these positions with well trained, educated, and motivated employees possessing two years of technical training. That is where you come in, and where the Industrial Technology-mining emphasis program at Mesabi Range Community and Technical College comes in!

The average entry level pay at a taconite mining / processing employer $15-$20/hr, mid level pay (after 1-2 years): $20-$25/hr, maximum pay: $25-$30/hr. Since there are overtime opportunities, typical yearly pay ranges from $40,000 to $80,000+ per year. These jobs offer full benefits, paid vacation and overtime, etc.

The Industrial Technology with Mining Emphasis AAS degree is tailored to meet the needs of the Iron Range’s mining industry –as well as other industries- by teaching critical knowledge to future employees. You will achieve broad based skills training as well as in-depth knowledge in many facets of production, quality, safety, and maintenance: skills critical for work in taconite mining and processing, power generation, and many other industries. We refer to this as a “Rock to Dock” education. Attached is an outline and description of the courses you will take.

Potential summer internship opportunities at local mines and other employers will provide valuable hands-on, practical experience coupled with the chance to network for prospective employment AND make money.

How to continue your education to get your 4-year Bachelor’s degree in as little as 2 more years!

We are working to make the 2-year AAS degree in Industrial Technology-mining emphasis articulate with 4 year universities so you can get your Bachelors degree in just 2 more years. What this means is you can get your AAS degree at Mesabi Range Community and Technical College and go get a job. OR, you can go to certain 4-year universities and get your Bachelor’s degree in as little as 2 more years. This means that in as little as 4 years, you can get 2 degrees: Your AAS and your BS degrees. We are working with Bemidji State University and Northern Michigan University on this currently. Stay tuned…. Bemidji offers on-line classes so you can work AND get your 4-year degree at the same time.. Note that at other universities it may take more time to get your 4-year degree, but many of the courses you take in the IT-Mining Emphasis program do transfer.
